Iran warns of retaliation after US seizes vessel

Published on: April 20, 2026 10:59 AM

Iran warns of retaliation after accusing US of attacking vessel during fragile ceasefire

Iran Joint Military Command has strongly condemned the reported US action against an Iranian commercial vessel, calling it a violation of the ceasefire understanding and an act of maritime aggression. Iranian officials have warned that a response will be delivered “very soon” following the seizure.

According to the statement, the vessel targeted by US forces was reportedly traveling from China to Iran when it was intercepted. Iranian military authorities described the incident as “maritime robbery” and accused Washington of escalating tensions in international waters.

🚨 BREAKING
Iran’s central military HQ:
“the US violated the ceasefire and carried out maritime piracy by firing on an Iranian commercial vessel in the Gulf of Oman, disabling its navigation system, and landing armed personnel on board.
Iran will respond soon.”

The Iranian Joint Military Command further claimed that, in response to the US action, Iranian forces carried out drone strikes on several US naval vessels operating in the region. No independent verification of the claim has been provided so far, and details of potential damage remain unclear.

The escalation comes after the United States Central Command (Centcom) confirmed that it had taken control of an Iranian-flagged ship, stating that the vessel is now under US custody. American officials said the operation was conducted after the ship allegedly attempted to violate a naval blockade in the region.

US President Donald Trump earlier stated on social media that the vessel was intercepted while attempting to breach restrictions in waters near the Strait of Hormuz. He said US forces acted to enforce maritime security measures and prevent violations of the blockade.

Iran, however, has rejected the US justification and accused Washington of undermining international maritime law. Iranian officials have repeatedly warned that continued pressure on its shipping routes could lead to broader regional consequences.

The situation has heightened tensions between the two countries at a time when maritime security in the Gulf region remains fragile. Analysts say the exchange of accusations and counter-claims increases the risk of further escalation in already volatile waters.
