Kremlin hails Israel-Lebanon ceasefire deal

Published on: April 17, 2026 10:30 PM

The Kremlin on Friday welcomed a U.S.-backed ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon and expressed hope it would prevent renewed fighting. The statement comes amid efforts to stabilize tensions in the Middle East. The development is significant as global powers push for regional de-escalation.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Russia supports the decision and hopes it leads to lasting agreements. He noted that the ceasefire could help avoid a return to armed clashes. Moreover, Moscow urged continued diplomatic engagement between the parties.

The ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon began at 5 p.m. EST on Thursday. It was brokered through U.S.-led negotiations involving regional and international stakeholders. Additionally, the truce is intended as a temporary step toward broader peace efforts.

The agreement comes as global attention remains focused on wider regional tensions, including the Iran-related conflict. U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed confidence that further agreements may follow. Furthermore, Washington has continued diplomatic outreach to prevent escalation.

Analysts say Russia’s endorsement reflects a broader international consensus in favor of de-escalation. However, they caution that ceasefires remain fragile without long-term political solutions. The coming days will test whether the truce can hold under pressure.
