Ron DeSantis, the governor of Florida, has signed a new law aimed at restricting the application of certain foreign legal systems and strengthening measures against extremist groups.

The legislation, known as HB 1471, prohibits the use or enforcement of foreign laws—including interpretations of Sharia law—if they are found to conflict with the constitutional rights guaranteed under US law. The move is part of a broader effort by state authorities to ensure that legal decisions remain consistent with the US Constitution.

According to Governor DeSantis, the state must operate under a unified legal framework in which the Constitution serves as the highest authority. He emphasized that maintaining the rule of law requires preventing the introduction of any parallel legal systems that could undermine established rights and protections.

The law also includes provisions designed to enhance public safety by targeting the activities of groups designated as terrorist organizations. Officials say the legislation will provide additional legal tools to counter threats and protect residents from potential harm.

DeSantis further stated that safeguarding public institutions, including the education system, is a priority. He expressed concerns about individuals or groups that, in his view, seek to disrupt or influence state systems in ways that could be harmful.

Supporters of the law argue that it reinforces constitutional principles and strengthens security measures. However, critics have raised concerns about the potential for the legislation to unfairly target specific communities or religious practices.

The development reflects ongoing debates in the United States over the balance between security, legal uniformity, and protection of religious freedoms, with the issue continuing to draw attention at both state and national levels.
