Israel passes defence budget boost for military amid Iran war

Israel parliament has approved a major increase in the military budget, allocating an additional 32 billion shekels to strengthen defense and security capabilities amid ongoing regional tensions.

According to international media reports, the new funding package was passed in Tel Aviv and is aimed at enhancing the operational readiness of the Israel Defense Forces. The budget includes 6 billion shekels for reserve forces and 5 billion shekels for the rehabilitation of areas near Gaza Strip affected by recent conflict.

Knesset has approved Israel’s 2026 state budget, significantly boosting military spending to over $45bn, as Benjamin Netanyahu secures his government and avoids early elections amid the war on Iran.

Officials noted that this allocation comes on top of earlier financial support, with around 20 billion shekels already provided to reserve personnel. The move reflects the government’s focus on strengthening defense infrastructure and ensuring preparedness in the face of evolving security challenges.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the government is committed to providing full resources to the military and security institutions. He added that efforts would also be made to ease the burden on citizens through adjustments in tax slabs.

Despite the increased spending, some Israeli citizens have voiced concerns, saying that even with high taxes, they do not feel secure in their homes. The sentiment highlights the ongoing debate over balancing defense expenditures with public welfare and economic stability.

Analysts suggest that the budget increase underscores Israel’s strategic priorities in a volatile regional environment. However, it may also place additional pressure on public finances, requiring careful economic management in the months ahead.

The decision comes as the region continues to witness heightened tensions, with governments focusing on both security preparedness and domestic economic considerations.
