Gas cylinder blast kills seven in Chaman home

Published on: February 26, 2026 8:49 PM

At least seven people, including five children, were killed and 25 others injured when a gas cylinder blast inside a house in Chaman, a border town in Balochistan, on Thursday, according to police and rescue officials.

The explosion occurred in the Torpal area, where a large number of residents, including women and children, had gathered at a home for a community event. Police said lassi was being distributed when the blast took place, triggering panic and widespread destruction.

Initial findings indicate that a 20-kilogram gas cylinder kept in the kitchen exploded suddenly, causing multiple rooms of the house to collapse. The force of the explosion resulted in fatalities and left dozens injured, some of them critically.

Police and rescue teams quickly reached the scene and began emergency operations. The injured were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment, while the deceased were shifted for medico-legal procedures. Authorities said rescue efforts continued for several hours to ensure no one remained trapped under the debris.

A bomb disposal squad was also called to the site to examine the exact cause of the explosion and confirm whether it was an accidental gas cylinder blast. Officials said investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances that led to the incident.

Gas cylinder explosions remain a serious safety concern in several parts of Pakistan, often caused by leakage, poor maintenance, or improper handling. Last week, a similar explosion in Karachi killed at least 13 people when a residential building collapsed.

Authorities have urged citizens to ensure proper installation, regular inspection, and safe use of gas cylinders to prevent such tragedies. Local officials also expressed condolences to the affected families and pledged support for the injured and victims’ relatives.
