West Indies prepare for Muzarabani challenge in super eights

Published on: February 22, 2026 8:00 PM

West Indies national cricket team coach Daren Sammy said his team has clear plans to counter Zimbabwe’s fast bowler Blessing Muzarabani in their Super Eights clash. Speaking to reporters in Mumbai, Sammy acknowledged the tall pacer’s impact but emphasized preparation and strategy. He described Muzarabani as a significant threat with strong match influence. However, he insisted that his squad understands how to limit dangerous players.

Muzarabani, standing 2.03 meters tall, impressed during the group stage by taking nine wickets, including a standout performance of 4 for 17 against Australia. His efforts helped Zimbabwe top a group that included strong teams. Consequently, he entered the next phase as one of the tournament’s key performers. Sammy noted that West Indies respect every opponent, not just one standout player.

The West Indies will begin their Super Eights campaign at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium against Zimbabwe, who emerged as surprise group leaders. Meanwhile, tournament organizers had pre-seeded teams before the competition began, meaning squads knew their potential second-phase venues in advance. Only Australia failed to qualify for this stage and was replaced by Zimbabwe. Therefore, the structure shaped matchups before results were finalized.

However, the tournament format has drawn criticism because all four group winners—India, South Africa, West Indies, and Zimbabwe—were placed in the same Super Eights group. As a result, two group winners will not advance to the semi-finals. In contrast, the other group contains all four runners-up, including Sri Lanka, England, Pakistan, and New Zealand. Critics argue this arrangement creates imbalance in competition.

Despite concerns, Sammy defended the scheduling system, explaining that logistics and fan travel influenced planning decisions. He said organizers aimed to provide certainty so supporters could arrange flights and accommodations in advance. Furthermore, he acknowledged Zimbabwe’s strong performance and emphasized that every team earned its place. Looking ahead, Sammy confirmed that all players are available for selection, including all-rounder Romario Shepherd, who may return after recovery and recent training sessions.
