Amazon enhances alexa memory to rival ChatGPT

Published on: January 25, 2026 4:52 PM

Amazon is improving its virtual assistant Alexa by giving it memory capabilities to recall user preferences and personal details, making interactions more natural and similar to conversations with friends or family.
The initiative was unveiled at CES 2026 in Las Vegas, aiming to boost Alexa’s relevance in the growing market of conversational AI and compete directly with ChatGPT.

Alexa first launched in 2014 as a simple voice assistant, performing basic tasks such as controlling smart devices and answering queries, but it struggled to maintain dominance after ChatGPT’s introduction in 2022.
The popularity of ChatGPT forced Amazon to rethink Alexa’s strategy, leading to the launch of Alexa+ last year, which promised more personalized and context-aware interactions across devices.

Panos Panay, Amazon’s Devices and Services Chief, highlighted that users value personalized experiences over simple tasks, noting that Alexa+ focuses on remembering previous interactions to provide timely and relevant suggestions.
For example, when Panay searched for dog harnesses, Alexa recalled the query and displayed options on his Echo Show during a later interaction, demonstrating its evolving contextual understanding.

The new Alexa website now allows users to chat with the assistant online, creating seamless conversations that continue across devices, resembling platforms developed by OpenAI and AI startup Perplexity.
This functionality gives Alexa a more interactive and persistent presence, distinguishing it from competitors like ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini by offering continuity and memory-based personalization.

By enhancing memory and contextual awareness, Alexa+ aims to deliver a highly personal AI experience that anticipates user needs, manages tasks efficiently, and strengthens Amazon’s position in the competitive AI market.
Amazon’s strategy reflects the broader trend of integrating human-like memory and conversational abilities into AI assistants, emphasizing convenience, personalization, and seamless multi-device functionality.
