A high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Sohail Afridi reviewed the province-wide rollout of the Safe Cities Project, focusing on operational progress, planned expansion, and the legal and institutional framework needed to support it.

Officials said parallel work is underway in Dera Ismail Khan, Bannu, and Lakki Marwat, with surveillance networks and integrated command and control systems being installed in phases. Cameras are being set up across major roads, intersections, and key entry and exit points in the provincial capital, while 88 locations in Dera Ismail Khan, 76 in Bannu, and 47 in Lakki Marwat are scheduled to go live by the end of January.

Preparatory work for Karak, Tank, and North Waziristan districts has also been completed, including site identification and security assessments. Officials discussed the establishment of a dedicated Safe Cities Authority to manage governance, lawful use of surveillance data, data protection, citizens’ privacy, and inter-agency coordination.

CM Afridi emphasized integrating existing CCTV infrastructure in hotels, commercial areas, housing societies, and educational institutions into the Safe City network, ensuring adherence to technical standards, privacy safeguards, and legal requirements. He also directed a 24-hour solar energy supply for Safe Cities infrastructure in the merged tribal districts.

The chief minister said the project would significantly enhance crime prevention, enable faster emergency response, and strengthen law-enforcement operational capacity. He noted that the initiative is a technology-driven effort to lay the groundwork for lasting peace and security across the province, with future expansion planned for other divisional headquarters based on security priorities and population needs.
