The live-action adaptation is set to be directed by Michael Gracey, celebrated for helming The Greatest Showman. Reports suggest that Scarlett Johansson is in talks to play Mother Gothel, the villainous captor of Rapunzel, though Disney has not confirmed any additional casting or the release timeline.
The announcement comes as Disney continues its successful streak of live-action remakes. Last year, Lilo & Stitch earned over $1 billion globally, following other hits such as Snow White starring Rachel Zegler and The Little Mermaid with Halle Bailey. Fans are already speculating about how Gracey’s direction and the new leads will reinterpret the classic songs and story that made Tangled a household favorite.
