K-pop supergroup BTS will release a new album on March 20, marking their long-awaited return after a hiatus that began in 2022, the band announced on Thursday ahead of a planned world tour later this year.
South Korea’s biggest musical act had paused group activities as its members completed mandatory military service, a legal requirement for all South Korean men under the age of 30. All seven members were discharged last year, paving the way for the group’s first full comeback in nearly four years.

The album release date was initially shared through handwritten letters sent to paid members of BTS’s official fan community, before being confirmed publicly by the group’s label, Big Hit Music. In his letter, group leader RM expressed his excitement about the return, writing that he had been “waiting more earnestly than anyone else.”

While details about the album’s title, track list and tour schedule remain under wraps, the announcement has sparked global anticipation among fans. The upcoming release will be BTS’s first album since Proof, an anthology record that became South Korea’s bestselling album of 2022.
Prior to their hiatus, BTS had a massive economic and cultural impact both domestically and internationally. According to official estimates, the group generated more than 5.5 trillion won ($3.8 billion) annually for South Korea, equivalent to about 0.2 per cent of the country’s gross domestic product.
Beyond their economic influence, BTS has played a key role in expanding the global reach of K-pop. The group holds the record as the most-streamed group on Spotify and was the first K-pop act to top both the Billboard 200 albums chart and the Billboard Artist 100 in the United States.
