High stakes job inside OpenAI

Published on: December 31, 2025 7:59 PM

OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman has described the company’s latest senior role as demanding and highly stressful, despite its unusually generous pay package. The position, which offers compensation exceeding one million dollars, reflects growing pressure on technology leaders to address escalating artificial intelligence risks responsibly.

The newly advertised role of head of preparedness will focus on identifying, managing, and reducing threats emerging from advanced AI systems. Altman openly warned candidates that the job requires immediate immersion into complex challenges. He stressed that responsibilities will grow quickly as AI tools evolve. Therefore, resilience and sharp judgment are considered essential for success.

Altman shared his candid assessment through a public post, noting that rapid model improvements create both opportunity and danger. He acknowledged that while AI delivers powerful benefits, it also introduces real-world risks. Consequently, OpenAI aims to strengthen internal safeguards. The role is central to balancing innovation with accountability.

The hiring push follows mounting evidence of AI-related harm across global industries. Recent disclosures showed that 418 billion-dollar companies reported reputational damage linked to AI risks. These included biased data outputs and cybersecurity vulnerabilities. Alarmingly, such reports increased by 46 percent compared to the previous year, intensifying regulatory and public scrutiny.

OpenAI has already taken steps to address safety concerns after criticism over its products, including ChatGPT. The company formed an advisory council and updated systems to better support user well-being. Meanwhile, former preparedness head Aleksander Madry was reassigned as leadership structures evolved.

Altman emphasized that future AI progress depends on careful oversight and ethical deployment. He urged applicants motivated by public safety and cybersecurity to consider the role. As AI influence expands globally, OpenAI’s next preparedness leader will play a crucial role. The position underscores how managing AI risk has become as important as advancing the technology itself.
