Russia rejects Taiwan independence, warns against escalation

Published on: December 28, 2025 1:15 PM

Russia firmly opposes Taiwan’s independence in any form, stressing that the island remains an inseparable part of China, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated during an interview with TASS state news agency.

Lavrov also addressed regional security concerns, urging Japan to reconsider its course toward militarisation, highlighting Moscow’s position on maintaining stability in East Asia amid rising geopolitical tensions.

Beijing considers Taiwan part of its territory and has repeatedly warned that it may use military force to prevent any attempts at formal independence, reinforcing its “One China” policy.

Recently, the United States approved $11 billion worth of arms sales to Taiwan, marking one of the largest weapons packages aimed at deterring a potential Chinese military action.

The arms deal, approved by the U.S. State Department and pending congressional approval, is expected to take effect in about a month, according to Taiwan’s Defense Ministry, raising concerns in Beijing and Moscow alike.

China has demanded that Washington “immediately stop” arming Taiwan, warning that such measures escalate tensions and threaten peace in the Taiwan Strait, with Russia supporting Beijing’s position on the matter.
