Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday directed authorities to intensify action against smuggling and tax evasion to protect Pakistan’s economy. He chaired a weekly review meeting on the Federal Board of Revenue’s (FBR) performance, praising recent customs operations. The PM emphasized that no leniency would be shown to smugglers or tax evaders.
During the meeting, officials briefed the prime minister on anti-smuggling measures and enforcement initiatives. They highlighted progress in curbing illegal trade and improving revenue collection. Shehbaz noted that billions of rupees are lost annually due to smuggling, which harms economic stability and reduces national capital.
The prime minister said successful anti-smuggling operations have encouraged legal imports, strengthening revenue and promoting fair business practices. He directed provincial governments to fully support the FBR, especially in shutting down illegal petrol pumps. Officials also described the new integrated customs system enhancing coordination nationwide.
Authorities informed Shehbaz that GPS tracking has been implemented for petroleum transportation, helping prevent diversion and smuggling. Revenue from petroleum products rose by 82 percent from July to November due to stricter controls. The Raahguzar app has also helped register petrol pumps and monitor legal operations effectively.
