Turkey and Britain signed a major Turkey fighter jet deal worth $11 billion, strengthening defence ties between the two NATO allies. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer met President Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara on Monday to finalize the purchase of 20 Eurofighter Typhoon jets. The deal aims to boost Turkey’s air power and deepen military cooperation with Europe.
In July, both countries reached a preliminary agreement for 40 Typhoon jets, supported by Eurofighter consortium members Germany, Italy, and Spain. The companies involved include Airbus, BAE Systems, and Leonardo. This final agreement marks a key step in Turkey’s strategy to modernize its air fleet and match regional rivals such as Israel.

Turkey, NATO’s second-largest military, has recently strengthened ties with Western allies. It has also been pursuing additional aircraft, including potential US-made F-35s, to replace its ageing F-16 jets. European nations are increasingly turning to Turkey for military cooperation. Its drone technology and strategic location make it an essential partner in stabilizing Eastern Europe and potentially supporting future peace operations in Ukraine.

Officials said Israel’s recent air attacks across the Middle East have heightened Turkey’s security concerns. The Turkey fighter jet deal helps Ankara fill a temporary gap until its locally developed KAAN fighter jets are ready. Starmer’s visit marked his first trip to Turkey since taking office last year, signalling stronger bilateral and defence relations.
