LONDON – Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai has shared candid details of her secret relationship with her now-husband Asser Malik during her years at Oxford University, in excerpts from her upcoming memoir Finding My Way. The revelations, published by Vogue ahead of the book’s October 21 release, provide a rare glimpse into Malala’s personal life, exploring her journey of love, family tension, and self-discovery.
Malala described the early days of her relationship as a delicate balancing act — hiding from security, managing parental expectations, and sneaking in moments of affection amid her demanding academic life. “Asser’s arrival vanquished the dark clouds that hung over the prospect of my third term at Oxford, but it wasn’t exactly the carefree summer romance of rom-coms,” she wrote.

In one anecdote, Malala recounted a comical yet nerve-wracking moment when she hid behind a hedge to avoid being seen by her family: “I worried a lot about getting caught. I ran behind a hedge to hide, alarming both Asser and my security team.” She also shared the story of a wardrobe switch to avoid disapproval — changing from a modest shalwar kameez into a sleeveless pink dress and heels during one of their dates. “When I returned to the table, Asser sat up straight and his mouth broke into a smile I hadn’t seen before. He whispered, ‘You’re a sex bomb!’”
However, their budding romance soon faced resistance at home. When Malala’s father informed her mother, she strongly objected, saying: “Absolutely not! Does he even speak Pashto? She must marry a Pashtun man!” Malala revealed how the situation created emotional turmoil, with her parents fearing scandal. Despite the pressure, she was unwilling to end the relationship. “They anticipated a scandal and said I should stop seeing him. I wasn’t going to do that.”

In an emotional moment, Malala asked Asser if they could pause their relationship until she completed her studies. He responded: “I’m not sure feelings work that way.
