Israel pounds Gaza as Hamas weighs Trump plan

Published on: October 1, 2025 10:33 PM

Heavy Israeli airstrikes shook Gaza City on Wednesday as Hamas continued discussions on US President Donald Trump’s proposed peace plan, aimed at halting nearly two years of deadly conflict. Trump’s initiative includes a ceasefire, the release of hostages within 72 hours, Hamas’s disarmament, and a gradual Israeli withdrawal, with backing from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The proposal has received support from several global powers, including Arab and Muslim nations, while also suggesting a transitional authority for Gaza led by Trump himself. However, Hamas sources said no final decision has been made, and discussions could take two or three more days. They stressed that amendments are sought, especially regarding the disarmament clause and the demand for Hamas’s removal from Gaza’s future leadership.

Hamas negotiators further requested international guarantees ensuring Israel’s complete withdrawal and an end to targeted assassinations. Meanwhile, Gaza’s civil defence reported at least 13 deaths from fresh Israeli strikes, including six people killed in a school shelter and seven others in a family home. The Israeli military stated it was reviewing these claims, but independent verification remains difficult due to restricted access in Gaza.

Residents described a terrifying situation with unrelenting explosions across Gaza City, leaving many displaced and living in makeshift tents near hospitals. Despite Israel urging evacuations, many locals refused to leave, fearing equal dangers in the south. The military also announced the closure of Al-Rashid Street, the last remaining northern access route, further tightening movement for civilians.

Within Hamas, two opinions are reportedly dividing leadership. One faction supports unconditional approval of Trump’s plan to secure an immediate ceasefire under international guarantees, while another rejects disarmament and insists on protecting Palestinian rights. Leaders emphasized they seek peace, but not at the cost of abandoning national principles or allowing forced expulsions.

The ongoing war has devastated Gaza, reducing neighborhoods to rubble and killing more than 66,000 Palestinians, mostly civilians. Israel says Hamas’s October 2023 attack killed 1,219 people, also mainly civilians. With both sides entrenched, civilians continue to bear the heaviest toll as the world awaits Hamas’s decision on Trump’s proposal.
