The Centre for Aerospace and Security Studies (CASS) Lahore hosted a roundtable titled “Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Technology”. The event was widely attended by academics, students, intellectuals, and domain experts. CASS is an independent think tank that continues to arrange academic events for scholars and practitioners interested in national security in its wider context. .
The speaker, Dr Ansar Pervaiz, Advisor to the National Command Authority, emphasised that resistance to nuclear energy does not stem from its inherent dangers but from a long-standing communication gap. He further debunked the false perception regarding nuclear technology by stating that radiation risks are scientifically manageable. While highlighting the tangible benefits of nuclear technology, he noted its role in medical treatment and agriculture. He credited institutions such as the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) for spearheading advancements in the peaceful application of nuclear technology. Discussing global nuclear governance, he reaffirmed Pakistan’s constructive engagement in international dialogue, clarifying its positions on treaties such as the CTBT and NPT. He added that Pakistan advocates an equitable, non-discriminatory framework that safeguards its legitimate security concerns while enabling the peaceful use of nuclear technology for the benefit of its people.
In his closing remarks, Air Marshal Asim Suleiman (Retd), President CASS Lahore, highlighted that nuclear science must be seen not only through the lens of deterrence but also as a force for human progress. He emphasised its role in health, agriculture, and industry, providing clean energy and advancing sustainable development. Stressing knowledge, innovation, and responsible governance as the foundations of trust, he urged Pakistan to expand its national conversation on the peaceful uses of nuclear technology and embrace its immense socio-economic dividends for future generations.
During the interactive session, the audience actively explored the physics and mechanics of nuclear technology, its peaceful applications, and the framework of nuclear safeguards, with particular emphasis on global obligations and international compliance.
