Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday approved the launch of a new rail car project to connect Islamabad and Rawalpindi. Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony of the T-Chowk Flyover, the prime minister described the rail link as a public welfare initiative aimed at easing daily transport for residents of the twin cities and nearby areas.
PM Shehbaz directed Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi to begin work on the project without delay. He emphasized that the existing railway track would allow for quick implementation. Once launched, the rail car service is expected to improve commuting and support tourism in the region.
The prime minister assured full federal support for the project, calling it vital for regional development. He said the initiative aligns with his government’s focus on modern, efficient, and people-friendly transport solutions. Officials believe the project will also reduce road traffic and pollution.
Earlier in the day, PM Shehbaz inaugurated the Rs1.4 billion T-Chowk Flyover at the junction of Islamabad Expressway and G.T. Road. The flyover, scheduled for completion in 150 days, is designed to reduce congestion and improve traffic flow between Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and adjoining towns.
Together, the rail car project and T-Chowk Flyover highlight the government’s broader push to upgrade transport infrastructure. Both projects are expected to benefit commuters, reduce travel time, and boost local tourism and trade in the capital region.
