The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast widespread heavy rains in Karachi and Sindh’s major cities until Wednesday. After morning showers on Monday, Karachi’s weather turned pleasant, with no major water accumulation so far. PMD official Anjum Nazir Zaigham said the deep depression centered in Tharparkar will weaken slightly but continue bringing downpours.
The Met Office warned of heavy to very heavy rains with strong winds in districts like Tharparkar, Umerkot, Mirpurkhas, Hyderabad, and Karachi division through September 10. PMD’s Flood Forecasting Division also cautioned about severe urban flooding and waterlogging in low-lying areas. Flash floods may hit hill torrents in Dadu district, raising concern for residents.
The weather advisory highlighted that rising water levels in Hub Dam and continuing rains in flood-affected areas could worsen conditions. Strong winds may damage weak structures such as katcha houses, electric poles, billboards, and solar panels. Farmers have been urged to manage activities carefully due to the challenging weather.
Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah announced that the peak flood in the Indus River is now expected at Guddu Barrage on September 9, with flows exceeding 800,000 cusecs. He confirmed accelerated evacuation efforts in vulnerable riverine areas and said provincial officials are actively supervising the process to ensure people’s safety.
Authorities have been urged to stay on high alert and take all necessary measures to prevent harm. With heavy rains and potential floods ahead, the focus remains on protecting lives and minimizing damage in Karachi and across Sindh province.
