PPP and JUI-F forge alliance talks ahead of crucial KP senate elections

Published on: July 12, 2025 3:35 PM

Leaders from Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) met at Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s residence in an important political move to form a joint strategy for the upcoming Senate elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP). The meeting was attended by KP Governor Faisal Karim Kundi, former KP Chief Minister Akram Khan Durrani, senior PPP leader Khurshid Shah, and other key figures from both parties, highlighting the seriousness of the alliance effort.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has announced polls for seven general seats, two women’s reserved seats, and two technocrats/Ulema seats in the KP Senate, with voting set for July 21, 2025. These elections were initially scheduled for April 2, 2024, but were delayed due to issues like the refusal of the provincial assembly speaker to administer oaths and an incomplete electoral college.

Apart from election preparations, the leaders also discussed the worsening law and order situation in KP, rising corruption, and concerns over provincial autonomy. They highlighted the growing dissatisfaction among residents of the merged tribal districts, emphasizing that these issues require political unity and focused governance reforms to restore stability.

The meeting also reflected a shared desire to improve democratic processes and strengthen cooperation between political parties to effectively address administrative challenges. Both PPP and JUI-F leaders showed willingness to set aside differences to tackle these common problems together.

This strategic alliance between PPP and JUI-F ahead of the Senate polls could reshape the political landscape of KP and demonstrates efforts to build a stronger, more cohesive political front to better serve the province’s needs.
