Punjab on alert: Heavy monsoon rains expected in next 24 hours

Published on: July 8, 2025 3:38 PM

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has warned of heavy monsoon rains expected to lash most parts of Punjab in the next 24 hours. According to PDMA spokesperson Irfan Kathia, the monsoon system is active and likely to persist until July 10, bringing strong showers, possible urban flooding, and storm-related hazards.

The spokesperson urged citizens to stay indoors during thunderstorms and avoid taking shelter in weak or old buildings. He also advised drivers to slow down during rain, maintain safe distances, and avoid unnecessary travel, especially in low-lying areas.

In case of any emergency or flooding, residents are instructed to contact the PDMA helpline 1129, which remains active round-the-clock. Emergency response teams have been alerted across all vulnerable districts, and coordination with local bodies has been strengthened.

Meanwhile, Lahore experienced early morning rainfall today, soaking the city. WASA reported 53mm of rain in Nishtar Town, the highest recorded in the city. Other areas like Jail Road (47mm), Qurtaba Chowk (44mm), and Gulberg (43mm) also faced significant downpours. WASA teams are actively clearing waterlogged roads.

Rain was also recorded in Gulshan Ravi (35mm), Iqbal Town (33mm), Samanabad (28mm), and Johar Town (27mm). WASA assured that all disposal stations are functional and that drainage operations are in full swing.
