Details of lawmakers’ salaries in Pakistan have recently come to light. These include the pay of National Assembly, Senate, and provincial members. The figures show major differences between the salaries of lawmakers in different regions. This has started a new debate about fairness and balance in public pay structures.
Members of the National Assembly and Senate receive a gross monthly salary of PKR 705,000. This amount was set equal to a federal secretary’s salary. The decision was made to reflect their senior status. Their income is the highest among all lawmakers in the country.
In the provinces, Punjab Assembly members earn PKR 485,000. Gilgit-Baltistan lawmakers follow closely with PKR 465,000. Meanwhile, Balochistan Assembly members receive PKR 440,000. These salaries are lower than federal legislators but still high compared to other provinces.
However, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa members earn much less—PKR 260,000. Even lower are the Sindh Assembly members, whose gross salary is only PKR 155,000. These figures show a sharp contrast and raise questions about equal representation and compensation across the provinces.
As a result, many are asking why there is such a big gap in salaries. Some suggest reviewing the pay structure to ensure balance. Others worry it may affect performance and motivation among lawmakers in lower-paid provinces. The issue is likely to remain under public discussion in the coming weeks.
