Deadly Russian strikes on Kyiv kill 14, injure dozens amid G7 summit

Published on: June 17, 2025 1:02 PM

A massive Russian missile and drone strike on Kyiv has left 14 people dead and 44 injured, marking one of the deadliest attacks since the war began in February 2022. Ukrainian officials reported that 27 different sites in the capital were hit overnight, including homes, schools, and essential infrastructure.

Rescue workers raced against time in the Solomianskyi district, where a nine-storey building was reduced to rubble, destroying at least 30 apartments. Fires erupted in multiple areas after drone debris scattered across the city, further hampering rescue operations. Among the dead was a 62-year-old US citizen who died from shrapnel wounds.

The attack took place while world leaders gathered in Canada for the G7 summit. Interestingly, US President Donald Trump suggested that Russia should be readmitted into the G7, stating that the war might have been avoided had Russia remained a member. His comments sparked controversy given the scale of the latest Russian assault.

Meanwhile, Russian Defence Ministry officials claimed they intercepted 147 Ukrainian drones, including many near Moscow. However, Ukrainian authorities described the scale of Russia’s assault as “unprecedented,” with civilian areas and vital services being the primary targets. Kyiv’s Mayor Vitali Klitschko said, “Russia is trying to break us, but we will resist.”

In addition to Kyiv, the southern region of Odesa also came under attack, where 13 people were reported injured. Despite ongoing peace talks between Russia and Ukraine, little progress has been made, and the violence shows no signs of slowing. Russian security chief Sergei Shoigu’s recent visit to North Korea also signals Moscow’s efforts to deepen military ties in the region.
