Microsoft brings Elon Musk’s grok AI to azure despite controversy

Published on: May 20, 2025 6:43 PM

In a bold move, Microsoft has partnered with Elon Musk’s xAI to bring the Grok AI chatbot to its Azure cloud platform, even after recent backlash over the model’s controversial responses. Announced during Microsoft’s Build 2025 developer conference, the deal will make Grok 3 and Grok 3 Mini available through Azure AI Foundry. This expands Azure’s growing catalog of generative AI models, which already includes offerings from OpenAI, Meta, and Stability AI.

The decision follows public criticism of Grok for sharing conspiracy theories and racially sensitive claims, particularly about South Africa. xAI blamed the issue on an “unauthorized modification” and promised tighter internal controls, including 24/7 monitoring and prompt transparency. Elon Musk addressed the controversy in a pre-recorded chat with Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, saying, “Our models aspire to truth with minimal error.” He also pledged openness and better safety measures to regain trust.

Microsoft will now offer the Grok models on Azure with strict governance, billing protocols, and enterprise-level service agreements. The company aims to position Azure as a neutral AI hub, hosting tools from multiple providers for wide-scale business use.

The Grok integration comes as Microsoft reportedly plans to lay off 6,000 employees while pivoting deeper into AI. This partnership reflects growing competition in cloud-based AI and signals Musk’s continued push into the enterprise AI market.
