Tomato prices push inflation up by 4 percent in September

KARACHI: A sharp increase in tomato prices pushed the consumer price index (CPI) inflation up by 4 percent on year-on-year basis in September 2017 as compared to an increase of 3.4 percent in the previous month and 3.9 percent in September 2016.

On month-on-month basis, it increased by 0.8 percent in September 2017 as compared to an increase of 0.2 percent in the previous month and increase of 0.2 percent in September 2016.

The increase in CPI during the month of September was mainly due to rise in food items’ rates as prices of onion, tomatoes, fresh vegetable went enormously up by 98.33 percent, 58.46 percent, and 10.16 percent respectively in the said month.

Core inflation measured by non-food non-energy CPI (Core NFNE) increased by 5.4 percent on (YoY) basis in September 2017 as compared to an increase of 5.5 percent in the previous month and 4.8 percent in September 2016. On (MoM) basis, it increased by 0.1 percent in September 2017 as compared to increase of 0.1 percent in previous month, and an increase of 0.3 percent in corresponding month of last year i.e. September 2016.

Core inflation, measured by 20 percent weighted trimmed mean CPI (Core Trimmed) increased by 4.1 percent on (YoY) basis in September 2017 as compared to 4.2 percent in the previous month and by 3.7 percent in September 2016. On (MoM) basis, it increased by 0.1 percent in September 2017 as compared to an increase of 0.1 percent in the previous month and an increase of 0.1 percent in corresponding month of last year i.e. September 2016.

Sensitive Price Index (SPI) inflation on YoY increased by 1.9 percent in September 2017 as compared to a decrease of 0.1 percent a month earlier and an increase of 1.8 percent in September 2016. On MoM basis, it increased by 2.1 percent in September 2017 as compared to an increase of 0.5 percent a month earlier and an increase of 0.1 percent in September 2016.

Wholesale Price Index (WPI) inflation on YoY basis increased by 1.6 percent in September 2017 as compared to an increase of 1.0 percent a month earlier and an increase of 3.4 percent in September 2016. WPI inflation on MoM basis increased by

0.1 percent in September 2017 as compared to a decrease of 0.3 percent a month earlier and a decrease of 0.5 percent in corresponding month of last year i.e. September 2016.
