ISLAMABAD – US journalist/author Mark Seigel on Monday shows willingness to record his statement via video conference in Benazir Bhutto assassination case, a private TV channel reported. Seigel will record his statement at the Pakistan Embassy in Washington at 7:30pm on August 26. In Pakistan, the statement will be recorded in the Commissioner Office in Rawalpindi where the prosecutor, FIA officials and defence counsels will also be present. A close friend and confidante of the late prime minister, Seigel who had earlier refused to record his statement is an important prosecution witness in the case. Earlier, he cited security reasons for his refusal to appear in person to record the statement. ATC Special Court Judge Ayub Marth will supervise the recording of the statement. The channel reported that the judge will be able to question Seigel after he has made his statement. According to a report, statements of 56 witnesses have been recorded so far in the Benazir – a two-time former prime minister – was assassinated outside Liaquat Bagh in Rawalpindi on December 27, 2007. According to Siegel, then president Pervez Musharraf had threatened Benazir with ‘dire consequences’ if she returned home before the election 2008.
