Rangers’ special powers extended for 90 days

Published on: April 24, 2016 11:16 PM

KARACHI: The Sindh government has extended Rangers’ special policing powers for another 90 days.

The policing powers of the paramilitary force were going to expire on May 3.

Under the extended powers, the paramilitary force can detain and question any person suspected of being involved in terrorism directly or indirectly. The issue of the extension in Rangers’ special policing powers became controversial last time when the Sindh government moved a summary to the federal government, curtailing their powers in the anti-terrorism operations. The Interior Ministry rejected the Sindh government’s move.

In another development, the Sindh Rangers has sought details of the officials of the fire brigade department after a terror suspect disclosed that certain elements in the department were backing terrorists and target killers.

Sources said that details of the officials were being gathered and the Rangers had contacted Chief Fire Officer Tahseen Siddiqui to collect details of the officials in charge of 22 fire stations in the metropolitan city.
