LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minsiter Shahbaz Sharif has announced to increase monthly wage of labourers from Rs13,000 to Rs14,000 from July 1. The target has been fixed to bring every child working at petrol pumps, workshops, brick kilns and hotels to school, said the chief minister while addressing the ceremony of launching of “Khidmat Cards” for financial assistance of children of labourers working at brick kilns, at Expo Centre, Johar Town, on Sunday. The chief minister said that the Punjab government has achieved target of elimination of child labour at brick kilns to a large extent, and so far 48,000 children have been enrolled in schools. He said that every child is given Rs 1,000 as monthly stipend while Rs 2,000 have been provided to the parents of the children. He said that free books, uniform, stationery and shoes have also been provided to the children by the government. “We will have to vow that we will not rest until every child is admitted to school,” he said, while appreciating the role of brick kiln owners for extending cooperation to the government. In an indirect reference to Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, the chief minister said the “boy” has demanded resignation from the prime minister, but he should know that corruption was rampant during the tenure of his father. He said that scandals of corruption of billions of rupees during the period of his father are available and he should think before speaking. He said the time has come that “we all should be held accountable”. Referring to the public gathering of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in Lahore, he said those demanding resignation from the prime minister in the wake of Panama leaks have their loans written-off and have also established offshore companies. He said the prime minister has constituted a commission as per the demands of the opposition and now it has started making hue and cry over the terms of reference (ToRs) of the probe commission. Everything will become clear after the investigation by the commission, he said, adding those talking of accountability and corruption should know that a historic achievement has been made by saving Rs 215 billion in the projects of federal and the Punjab governments. Later, International Labour Organisation (ILO) adviser appreciated the Punjab government for taking historic steps for the welfare of the workers. Provincial Ministers Raja Ashfaq Sarwar, Ayesha Ghaus Pasha, Malik Nadeem Kamran, Labour leader Khursheed Khan, Punjab chief secretary, brick kiln owners, labourers and their families and children, besides representatives of ILO, UNICEF and a large number of people from different walks of life attended the ceremony.
