ISLAMABAD: Terming the May 12 a ‘black day’, the legislators in Lower House of parliamenton on Thursday regretted that neither any democratic government nor then chief justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Chaudhry conducted a thorough inquiry into the brutal killing of more than 50 people in Karachi in year 2007. The legislators said almost nine years have passed since the tragedy took place but victims were still waiting for justice. Neither trials were held nor punishments were awarded, parliamentarians said while speaking on a point of order raised by Mehmood Khan Achakzai. Raising the issue, Achakzai said military dictator Pervez Musharraf was in power and lawyers’ movement was in full swing at the time. He regretted that even judiciary, after restoration of Iftikhar Chaudhry could not investigate the incident. “Let us today demand from government and judiciary to make proper investigation into the matter as the victim families were waiting for justice,” he maintained. Federal Minister for Railways Khawaja Saad Rafique described May 12 a ‘black day’ in the history of the country which could never be forgotten. The minister said, “We should learn lessons from past mistakes. The MQM was asked to hold a rally on that day. We requested the MQM to postpone it but no one can set aside the orders of a dictator.” MNA Tariq Mehmood was of the view that anti-Pakistani elements carried out the May 12 incident. Though the Karachi law and order situation has improved a lot but not even a single step has been taken to probe the incident. Several other MNAs spoke on the occasion and condemned the incident. Interestingly, all these MNAs belonged to ruling PML-N but the speaker could not give any ruling for an investigation into the incident. The opposition parties, meanwhile, continued their protest and boycotted the proceedings while staging a walkout. The National Assembly passed two bills as the opposition walked out of the House. These are: “The Electoral Rolls (Amendment) Bill, 2015” and “The Delimitation of Constituencies (Amendment) Bill, 2015”. The bills were moved by Minister State for Parliamentary Affairs Shaikh Aftab Ahmad.
