NAUSHEHRO FEROZ: Hundreds of thatched houses in 25 villages of the district were washed away after a 60-feet wide breach developed at a dyke of Nusrat Canal.Standing crops over hundreds of acres were also damaged.
Affected villagers and growers said that standing crops, stocks of grains and other valuables were swept away causing million of rupees loss to them. They bemoaned absence of government support for the victims who suffered huge losses. People moved from inundated areas to safer places without any official support, they said.
Indus River is swelling at Guddu Barrage with addition of 10,000 cusecs; the water flow at upstream of the barrage was recorded at 325,848 cusecs and at downstream the flow was gauged at 297,028 cusecs.
Local administration has advised the people living in the low-lying areas of Kandhkot and Kashmore to move to safer places. The provincial government, however, failed to provide shelters to the people living in vulnerable areas.
The authorities had declared six dykes on the Indus River (from Guddu to Kashmore and Shikarpur) as vulnerable to the ravages of flood flow.
Work on sensitive portions of dykes was still in process. Local people alleged officials concerned misappropriated funds released to carry out dyke strengthening, lining and cleaning work.
