Police may name Mufti Qawi in Qandeel murder case

Published on: August 12, 2016 11:35 PM

MULTAN: Police are considering naming Mufti Qawi, suspended member of the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee, as an accused in the murder case of QandeelBalochon the ground that his pictures with the slain social media celebrity resulted in her murder.

Superintendent of Cantonment PoliceSaifullah Khan Khattak said on Friday that the pictures that Baloch clicked with the cleric in Karachi led to her murder. He said that police could not give him a clean chit until completion of investigation.

Balochmet Qawiabout two months before she was killed by her younger brother for ‘honour’ on July 16 in Multan. She had taken selfies with Qawi during her meeting with him in a hotel in Karachi. After the pictures went viral on the social media, Qawi was suspended from his post.He is now fighting a legal case against his removal from the membership of the moon sighting committee. On the other hand, Qawi said it was unfair to link him to Baloch’s murder after Waseem, the main accused in the case, confessed to his crime and named his accomplices.Qawihas denied his involvement in the murder.

This is not the first time that Qawi, as he puts it, is being dragged into the case.Police sent him a questionnaire earlier in connection with an investigation into the Baloch murder. He answered all the questions asked by the Multan police in the questionnaire. According to a question he answered in the questionnaire, Qawi said he met Baloch once in Karachi and that was it.
