ALEPPO, Syria: Syria’s Aleppo faced intense air strikes that killed a team of medics as the UN Security Council held talks on Wednesday to revive the failed ceasefire. The UN meeting was called after the United States said it held Russia responsible for a deadly air strike on an aid convoy. US Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov were both to address the council ahead of more talks to salvage the truce – that collapsed on Monday – later this week. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon told the meeting that it was a ‘make or break moment’ for Syria and urged the world powers to use their influence to help Syrians ‘negotiate a way out of the hell in which they were trapped in’. Russia and the United States co-sponsored the ceasefire plan. However, Kerry warned that it could be the last chance to try to end Syria’s civil war – which has killed more than 300,000 people in five years. Peace efforts have been hindered by attacks – most recently by a deadly raid on a medical team near Aleppo late on Tuesday. The Union of Syrian Medical Relief Organisations (UOSSM) said the strike hit two of its ambulances in Khan Tuman – a village south of Aleppo city – as workers evacuated victims from a previous strike. Two nurses and two ambulance drivers were killed with another nurse being critically wounded, it added.
