Protest against water shortage in Azam Basti

KARACHI: Residents of Karachi’s Jamshed Town neighborhood, Azam Basti staged a protest on Friday outside Vice-Chairman Union Council-III Tahir Jameel’s office against the water shortages, theft and disruption of water supply to the area.

The protesters chanted slogans against concerned authorities.

Residents alleged that during the previous tenure in Local Bodies system, authorities got approved the water conduit to the area from the Karachi Water & Sewerage Board (KWSB) but laid the water pipeline to 2 inches below against the standard level in order to benefit the maximum flow of water to his neighborhood.

They complained that they are facing acute water shortage for last six years. They have taken up the issue with the concerned authorities several times but MD KWSB has not responded to their complaints.

The residents said limited quantity of water is being released to the area and even that at on the scheduled power load shedding time.

Talking to Daily Times over telephone, Vice-Chairman Union Council-III Tahir Jameel said illegal water connections during last six years has made situation from bad to worse. They are around 10,000 water connections in the locality and all with amunity of the officials of KWSB, he added.

He said with the non-availability of funds, local administrations handsare tied. “We have held several meeting with KWSB officials but they have kept their promises to lip-service only,” Jameel added.

However he assured that arrangements are being to divide the time between upper and lower areas on rotation basis so that maximum benefit could be provided with in available resources.
