RIYADH: Eidul Fitr is being celebrated in Saudi Arabia and several other countries today (Sunday) after the sighting of the Shawwal moon. Earlier, the Saudi Supreme Court had called on all Muslims throughout the kingdom to sight the moon of Shawwal on Saturday evening (29 Ramazan), 1438 H (June 24). In an announcement, the Saudi court said that whoever sighted the Shawwal crescent moon should report to the nearest court and register his testimony. According to astronomical projections, there was a chance of sighting of the moon on the 29 of Ramazan in Saudi Arabia on Saturday. Eid is also being celebrated in Turkey, the US, Egypt, Australia and New Zealand today. In Pakistan, the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee (CRHC) will meet in Peshawar today (Sunday) to sight the Shawwal moon. The meeting will be held at Aiwan-e-Auqaf – Eidgah, Charsadda Road with Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee Chairman Mufti Munibur Rehman in the chair. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has already predicted that Eidul Fitr is likely to be marked on June 26 (Monday). Published in Daily Times, June 25th, 2017.
