ISLAMABAD: Russia and Pakistan backdoor contacts have resulted in a major breakthrough, as Russia formally requested access to Gwadar Port and decided to be part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). Sources disclosed that a few days ago, the Russian intelligence agency, Federal Security Services, chief made a secret visit to Pakistan and met with different Pakistani high officials. During the meetings, the Russian side stated that it was interested in enhancing defence and military ties with Pakistan, adding that cooperation between intelligence agencies of the two countries would also be reshaped. Sources told Daily Times that this visit would be helpful in increasing economic and strategic ties between Russia and Pakistan. The Russian intelligence chief also visited Gwadar and after gauging the economic opportunities available in the area, gave green signal to the Russian government. The Russian intelligence chief was welcomed wholeheartedly, as the visit took place after 21 years. Pakistani officials gifted him with precious pistols as well. Sources said that Russia wanted to use Gwadar Port for international trade and assured Pakistan investment in various sectors as well. Pakistan and China would look into the Russian government’s request and all matters would be finalised soon in this regard. On the other hand, United Kingdom, Germany, Turkey, Italy and other European countries have also shown interest in CPEC. European countries were planning to start some projects regarding CPEC and negotiations in this regard were going on with Pakistani officials, sources added.
