Senate Subcommittee on Climate Change, on Tuesday, launched a campaign to make Islamabad plastic-free by August 14.
This pledge to make the federal capital “clean and green” was taken by Senator Mushahid Hussain Sayed as presided over the meeting held at COMSATS.
Committee Chairman also addressed the students and the faculty of the COMSATS; seeking their support for this cause.
Senator Sayed further announced that the committee would seek to finalise a landfill site for garbage disposal in the capital. He also talked about fields visits during the month of Ramazan for cleaning the nullahs and other encroached sites in Islamabad.
The chairman asked COMSATS to prepare a comprehensive media awareness plan to achieve the noble cause of “Clean and Green” Islamabad with the support of students, media, civil society and the concerned citizens.
The event was attended by faculty and students of COMSATS Islamabad, Vehari Lahore and Abbottabad campuses.
Referring to his recent visit to China, Sayed said the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and its flagship project CPEC were announced by Chinese President Xi Jinping to be on the”Clean and Green” Silk Road.
He talked about a special focus on “Green Development.”
Senator Sayed called climate change one of Pakistan’s premier challenges, which could only be met collectively, by rising above party lines.
The meeting was attended by Senators Muhammad Ali Khan Saif and Dr Asad Ashraf; COMSATS Executive Director Dr S M Junaid Zaidi; Leaders of the environmental activist group, “Green Force” Christina Afridi and Saima Umar; officials of the Ministry of Climate Change and Mayor’s Office.
The panel chalked out a work plan for a site visit of various localities of Islamabad during Ramadan.
