NJHP inches to full generation; crosses 1000 MW mark

Published on: April 10, 2019 6:39 AM

Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) claimed on Tuesday that the Neelum-Jhelum hydropower project (NJHP) had generated over 1000 megawatts of electricity.

In a statement by its spokesperson, the power project was said to have produced 1040 megawatts (MW) of electricity, which was above the designed capacity of 969 MW.

The power generation validated the high quality of the hydroelectric project, he added.

WAPDA Chairman has congratulated the management of the Neelum-Jhelum power project, especially engineers, for achieving a milestone. He expressed hope that the project would achieve the power-generation target of 4.6 billion units of electricity.

In an earlier statement, the Neelum-Jhelum power project was said to supply as many as 4.6 billion units of inexpensive electricity to the national power grid in the year 2019-20; generating yearly revenue of Rs 50 billion.

With the onset of increase in the flow of Neelum River as summer approaches, the Neelum-Jhelum Hydropower Project reached its peak capacity in March as it produced 969 MW of electricity. All four production units of the plant were running at their maximum. Each unit of the plant can produce 242.25 MW of electricity. On April 13, 2018, the Neelum-Jhelum Hydropower Project became operational with the commissioning of its first unit.

All four units were commissioned successfully by August 14, last year. Nevertheless, its power generation decreased in winter as the water flow reduced.
