Jail administration to request investigative team for Memon’s DNA tests

Published on: September 6, 2018 3:38 AM

Jail administration, on Wednesday, decided to request an investigative panel entrusted with the task of looking into the case of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Sharjeel Inam Memon to carry out his DNA test.

According to sources, Karachi Central Jail administration only made a verbal request to the investigative team and they will follow up with a written request soon. Reportedly, the jail administration would request that the parliamentarian’s DNA be compared with the findings of the tests conducted earlier.

Before this, on Sunday, an investigative team was formed to look into the discovery of imported liquor bottles from the hospital room where Memon was under treatment.

On Saturday, Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Justice Mian Saqib Nisar paid a surprise visit to hospital rooms of political prisoners. He went to Memon’s hospital room and visited the rooms of Abdul Ghani Majeed, son of Omni Group owner Anwar Majeed, who is being tried for money laundering and Hussain Lawai, the former head of Summit Bank. According to the top judge, he found liquor bottles, drugs and cigarettes from Sharjeel Inam Memon’s room, which had been declared a ‘sub-jail’.

Following this, Memon was sent to Karachi Central Prison, his hospital room was sealed and his blood samples were drawn for laboratory tests. Memon’s blood test report which was released on Monday revealed that no trace of alcohol was found in his blood samples.

Meanwhile, a report by Chief Chemical Examiner Dr Zahid Ansari said that the bottles seized from the parliamentarian’s room did not contain alcohol. “One of the bottles contained honey, the other cooking oil,” concluded the report.
