Tehreek-e-Labaik Ya Rasool Allah (TLYR) leader Maulana Ashraf Asif Jalali was declared ineligible to contest upcoming general elections under articles 62 and 63 of the constitution. Hearing an appeal against the approval of Jalali’s nomination papers for NA-81 Gujranwala constituency, an appellate tribunal of the Lahore High Court on Wednesday termed the returning officer’s decision as null and void, a private TV channel reported. The petitioner, who is a Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) candidate, stated that Jalali did not highlight any tax returns in his nomination papers. Signatures of the approver and the person suggesting him are also missing from his nomination papers and despite Supreme Court orders, Jalali failed to submit his passport to scrutinise his foreign travels, the petitioner stated. Earlier this year, Jalali-led TLYR said it will participate in the general elections with full force in a bid to ‘promote Islam’ in the country. Published in Daily Times, June 28th 2018.
