ISLAMABAD: Former President General (r) Pervez Musharraf on Friday resigned from All Pakistan Muslim League’s (APML) chairmanship. APML Dr Mohammad Amjad while talking to a local news channel said that Musharraf sent his resignation to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) as it was no longer possible for him to run the party sitting abroad. Amjad added that APML president had appointed him as the new chairman after forwarding his resignation to ECP. Earlier, ECP had rejected Musharraf’s nomination papers for NA-1 Chitral, after the Supreme Court (SC) withdrew its conditional approval as the former president failed to appear before the court. According to sources, APML sent out a formal request to ECP notifying about the change of party’s chairmanship. Amjad added that despite Musharraf’s resignation, he will remain APML’s supremo. APML was founded by Musharraf in 2010, although the former president was barred from contesting in elections and the party announced to have boycotted the 2013 elections. However, two of its candidates still contested and won two seats from Chitral.
