SU honoured with ISO certification as problems persist

Published on: June 15, 2018 9:06 PM

HYDERABAD: University of Sindh (SU) was on Friday granted the International Standards Organization (ISO) certification after it was deemed to meet all prescribed standards.

SU Public Relation Officer (PRO) Wahid Paras Hisbani said that all faces turned aglow when the happy tidings of SU winning ISO certification went on air.

Vice Chancellor Dr Burfat, in response to the news, expressed joy over the certification and lauded the SU family for the exceptionally incredible job. He complimented the head of SU ISO Certification Acquisition Cell and Associate Professor, Department of Sociology Dr Ameer Ali Abro and his team for their hard work and commitment.

The VC also paid rich tribute to SU faculty, officers, employees and students for having put in their best efforts. “We will not stop at that of course. Excellence is not an end of the road. It is rather a starting point for a yet bigger leap forward,” he added.

Daily Times, however, learnt that despite Sindh University being granted the ISO certification, the students are facing several problems in their related fields. It was learnt that there is no coordination between departments, while the SU has not designed any joint venture to organise study tours and trips to facilitate practical learning.

The major issue students are facing is flawed internship mechanism as several departments of the varsity are not able to facilitate their students with practical know-how.

In his remarks, Geologist Makwano Mahadev, who graduated from Centre for Pure and Applied Geology, said that the students are still waiting for a proper channel despite the ISO honour. He added that in June 1961, Geology department in SU was formed but the lack of research work in the field is clearly visible.

Ex-SU student Sarang said that rather than establishing a complaint resource mechanism (CRM) and counseling bench, SU isolates the students from advanced system and technological modifications. He said that acquiring ISO Certification is not a historic achievement and that in the present century, social scientists and social engineers SU students are not globally engaged.
