PDM issues heatstroke alert in Karachi

KARACHI: Due to extreme weather condition, Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a heatstroke alert for the people of Karachi as the temperature is expected to hit 43 degree today (Friday) as well.

Civil hospitals have declared an emergency, repealing hospital staff’s holidays.

The health department have announced that hospital staff will be on duty facilitate the public. Authorities have set water coolers at different spots. While the natives have asked the government to set up maximum heatstroke camps in the city.

Locals have advised the people to stay indoors, keep hydrated and to cover their heads while going outside. Doctors have advised precautionary measures to create awareness amongst the public to avoid heatstroke.

They have suggested not to consume contagious beverages from the vendors and to wear light colored cloths.

High temperatures were also observed in inner areas of Sindh as Dadu reeled under 45 degrees, MohenjoDaro 44 degrees while Sukkar, Khairpur and Ghotki is experiencing 43 degrees.

Three years ago, Karachi observed fetal heatwave, the one that Pakistan had seen in over almost 50 years.

That extreme heat spell begun on June 19 that year and continued for more than five days. It left at least 1200 people dead while 40,000 suffered heatstroke and exhaustion.
