Eagles overpower Patriots to win maiden Super Bowl

Published on: February 5, 2018 4:11 PM

MINNESOTA: Philadelphia Eagles clinched maiden Super Bowl after defeating New England Patriots by a score of 41-33 on Sunday.

The Super Bowl is an annual championship matchup in United States’ (US) National Football League (NFL), and its 52nd edition took place at Minnesota’s US Bank Stadium in a star-studded showdown.

Eagles defeated defending champions Patriots, who have also won the Super Bowl five times, by a score of 41 points to 33. Philadelphia dominated the first quarter 9-3, the second 13-9, and while the Patriots made a comeback in the third quarter with a convincing 14-7 score, it was not enough as the Eagles clinched the fourth quarter 12-7 and subsequently, the big prize.

The annual showdown is also known for its half-time celebrity performances. This year around, pop star Justin Timberlake took centre stage at the Bank stadium as the audiences danced to his rhythm. Last year, Lady Gaga graced the ceremony.

Speaking on occasion, Philadelphia Hall of Famer Brian Dawkins said that he is proud of the team’s performance. “This is an honor for me, my teammates and the Philadelphia Eagles fans. We are going to celebrate this together. There’s some unfinished business and I can’t wait to see that happen,” he said.

Following Philadelphia’s first Super Bowl triumph, supporters of the Eagles took to the streets to celebrate the historic day.
