ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan has said that Joint Investigation Team (JIT) cannot work independently under Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif. Speaking to reporters outside the National Assembly, Khan posed the question: “With which face will the PML-N confront the public after the comments made in the Supreme Court judgment?” “I asked the PML-N supporters, what were you distributing sweets for yesterday? You should have read the full judgment yesterday,” he said. “It has never happened in Pakistan’s history before those comments were passed against a sitting prime minister.” “All five judges have raised questions asked by the PTI,” he said, adding that the apex court had rejected all defence presented by the PM’s counsel. “Resign while you are being investigated,” he urged the premier. “This is not an unusual demand.” He said in a democracy the prime minister rules on the strength of moral authority and Nawaz Sharif has lost it, if he had any. If such damning comments from the judges had been passed in a democracy against the chief executive, he would have resigned himself, he said. The PTI chief compared the current scenario with the UK where David Cameron quit after he lost the Brexit referendum despite being elected with a huge majority because he lost the moral ground to lead. Imran asked if it was possible for heads of institutions like the National Accountability Bureau to investigate the prime minister while he is power. “If these institutions had been working, they would have stopped corruption already,” he asserted. He urged the prime minister to step down while he was being investigated. ‘All the judges have thrown away their defence, the Qatari letters were trashed like piece of paper and they claim victory.’ Our demand of Nawaz resignation is very justified, he added. He stated that they have reservations over JIT and they will approach the apex court in this regard after meeting.
