Fans hoping for a sequel to Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves may have to wait much longer, as co-writer and co-director Jonathan Goldstein says the project is unlikely to move forward because of financial challenges. Speaking at San Diego Comic-Con, Goldstein confirmed that he and longtime collaborator John Francis Daley completed a sequel script after being hired to develop the follow-up. However, he said the film has not received approval for production.

Goldstein explained that the main obstacle is the high cost of producing large-scale fantasy films, despite the team’s enthusiasm for the project. Moreover, he said he and Daley enjoyed working with the original cast and believed the completed screenplay would appeal to fans. Although the creative work has been finished, financial considerations have prevented the sequel from moving ahead.
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves received strong reviews after its 2023 release, earning a 91% critics’ score and a 92% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. The film starred Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Justice Smith, Sophia Lillis and Hugh Grant. Despite its positive reception, the movie earned $205 million worldwide against a reported production budget of $150 million, falling short of expectations after marketing costs were considered.

The sequel’s future has also been complicated by major changes within the entertainment industry since the first film’s release. Paramount Pictures, which co-produced and distributed the original movie, was acquired by Skydance Media in 2025, while entertainment company eOne, previously linked to the franchise through Hasbro, was sold to Lionsgate in late 2023. These corporate changes have added uncertainty to future projects based on the popular fantasy property.
Meanwhile, another live-action Dungeons & Dragons series that had been planned for Paramount+ was cancelled in 2024. However, Hasbro later moved forward with a new adaptation, The Forgotten Realms, which is currently in development at Netflix. For now, Goldstein and Daley’s completed sequel script remains without a production green light, and no release timeline has been announced.
