Short-term inflation down by 0.98%

The Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI)-based weekly inflation decreased by 0.98 percent during the week ended on July 02, 2026, for the combined consumption group, the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) reported Friday.

According to PBS data, SPI for the week under review dropped to 354.24 points as compared to 357.76 points recorded in the previous week. On a year-on-year basis, the SPI increased by 13.52 percent.

The weekly SPI with base year 2015-16=100 covers 17 urban centres and 51 essential items for all expenditure groups. The SPI for the lowest consumption group (up to Rs 17,732) increased by 1.42 percent to 344.22 points from 339.41 points. The SPI for consumption groups of Rs 17,733-22,888 and Rs 22,889-29,517 increased by 0.86 percent and 0.28 percent, respectively. Conversely, the SPI for groups of Rs 29,518-44,175 and above Rs 44,175 decreased by 0.32 percent and 2.00 percent, respectively.

During the week, out of 51 items, prices of 23 items (45.10 percent) increased, 11 items (21.57 percent) decreased, while 17 items (33.33 percent) remained stable.

On a week-on-week basis (WoW), the items that witnessed a decline in prices included petrol, which fell by 19.77 percent, followed by diesel 17.73 percent, LPG 12.60 percent, chicken 1.97 percent, bananas 1.44 percent, pulse moong 1.29 percent, pulse mash 0.84 percent, garlic 0.63 percent, pulse gram 0.23 percent, mustard oil and sugar by 0.21 percent each. On the other hand, major increase was observed in the prices of tomatoes which rose by 125.40 percent, followed by onions 10.72 percent, potatoes 10.06 percent, eggs 8.32 percent, wheat flour 5.08 percent, match box 0.96 percent, shirting 0.87 percent, washing soap 0.63 percent, milk fresh 0.49 percent, bread 0.47 percent, rice IRRI-6/9 0.45 percent and cigarettes by 0.23 percent.

On a year-on-year basis, prices of potatoes declined by 36.60 percent, followed by pulse gram 22.11 percent, sugar 19.42 percent, salt powder 14.09 percent, pulse masoor 12.32 percent, eggs 9.30 percent, chicken 6.96 percent and pulse moong by 6.06 percent over the same period of last year, PBS reported. Major increase was recorded in the prices of tomatoes by 238.72 percent, followed by onions 80.96 percent, wheat flour 68.47 percent, electricity charges for Q1 49.14 percent, LPG 44.08 percent, gas charges for Q1 29.85 percent, gents sponge chappal 16.69 percent, mutton 16.06 percent, chilies powder 15.20 percent, beef 12.89 percent, bananas 10.53 percent and bread by 9.18 percent.
