Montreal: Two people, including a police officer, were killed in a shooting incident in Montreal on Monday, while the suspected gunman was also shot dead, authorities confirmed.
The shooting occurred in the Côte-des-Neiges neighborhood, an area known for its kosher restaurants, supermarkets and a large Jewish community. The incident prompted a major police response, with officers securing the area and urging residents to stay away from the scene.
Montreal police said one of their officers was killed while responding to the situation. The officer was later identified as 34-year-old Mohamed Lamine Benredouane, who had served with the Montreal Police Service since 2021.
In a statement, police expressed their grief over the loss of the officer, describing the incident as a tragic day for the department. Montreal Police Chief Fady Dagher praised Benredouane as a dedicated and passionate officer, saying his death was a significant loss for both the force and the community.
Authorities also confirmed that a civilian was killed during the incident, although officials have not yet released the victim’s identity. Investigators are still working to determine the circumstances surrounding the civilian’s death and whether it was directly linked to the suspect’s actions.
According to police, the suspected gunman was shot and killed shortly after the violence began. Officials have not disclosed a motive and said the investigation remains ongoing.
Another police officer was seriously injured in the incident and is receiving medical treatment. Chief Dagher expressed support for the wounded officer and said the department stands behind her during recovery.
Police said the shooting began shortly before noon and that there is no longer any threat to public safety. Investigators are examining whether officers may have been lured to the scene, but officials stressed that it is too early to draw conclusions.
Community organizations and political leaders have urged the public to avoid speculation while authorities continue their investigation into the deadly shooting.
