Trump unveils new Air Force One, converted Qatari jumbo jet

Trump unveils the new Air Force One, a converted Qatari jet - POLITICO

JOINT BASE ANDREWS: US President Donald Trump on Friday unveiled a newly designated Air Force One aircraft, a former Qatar-owned Boeing 747 that has been converted into the official presidential jet, during a ceremony at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland.

The aircraft, previously owned by Qatar, has been extensively modified to serve as a temporary presidential transport until new Boeing-built aircraft are delivered, expected in 2028. The US Air Force said the jet meets strict security requirements after undergoing significant upgrades.

The newly styled aircraft features a redesigned exterior, moving away from the traditional light blue livery associated with earlier presidential planes. Instead, it displays a navy underbelly with a red stripe, a large American flag on the tail, and the presidential seal on the boarding side.

Speaking inside a hangar, Trump described the aircraft as a “flying White House,” highlighting its upgraded interior and luxury features. He added that the design reflects his personal preference and emphasised that the aircraft represents American prestige abroad.

The president also confirmed plans to use the aircraft for upcoming international trips, including the NATO summit in Ankara and a potential visit to China later in the year.

According to the US Air Force, the aircraft is serving as an interim solution while the next-generation presidential planes, known as VC-25Bs, are under development by Boeing. The delivery of the new fleet has been delayed.

Officials stated that the converted aircraft retains much of its original interior layout but has been upgraded to meet operational and security requirements for presidential use. The modification cost is estimated at under $400 million.

The decision to accept a foreign-owned aircraft has drawn attention in the past due to ethical and diplomatic considerations, though the administration maintains it is a temporary measure to ensure continuity of presidential air operations.

The existing VC-25A fleet will remain in service alongside the new aircraft until full replacement is completed.
