Organizers have announced that the funeral and burial of Iran’s former supreme leader Ali Khamenei will take place after Ashura. The decision was confirmed by the funeral committee overseeing arrangements. It matters as it sets the timing for one of Iran’s largest expected public gatherings.
According to the committee, all farewell and burial ceremonies will be held after the first ten days of Muharram. Officials said the schedule reflects respect for religious observances during the mourning period. They also urged the public to ignore unverified reports about earlier funeral dates.

Meanwhile, the committee said preparations are underway for large-scale public participation. Authorities are coordinating arrangements in major Iranian cities, including Tehran, Qom, and Mashhad. Officials expect significant turnout for the ceremonies.
In addition, the committee linked the decision to the importance of Ashura commemorations. Ashura marks the martyrdom of Imam Hussein and is observed widely across the Muslim world. The funeral will therefore be held after these religious observances conclude.
