Zelenskyy urges EU support for Armenia

Published on: June 8, 2026 9:34 PM

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy congratulated Armenia on its parliamentary election and urged stronger European Union engagement. He described Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s victory as a test of the EU’s commitment to Armenia. The comments underscore growing geopolitical competition over the South Caucasus region.

In a message posted on X, Zelenskyy praised Armenia for conducting what he called democratic and free elections. He also congratulated Pashinyan and his Civil Contract party on securing victory. According to Zelenskyy, the outcome reflected Armenia’s sovereignty, independence, and right to determine its own future.

The Ukrainian leader said the European Union should move quickly to support Armenia following the election. He argued that Armenians should see tangible improvements from closer ties with Europe. Zelenskyy warned that delays could weaken opportunities to strengthen cooperation and reinforce public confidence in the European path.

Meanwhile, preliminary results showed Civil Contract winning 49.81 percent of the vote in the parliamentary election. The result secured a significant political victory for Pashinyan amid ongoing domestic and regional challenges. Election authorities reported the outcome after counting all ballots cast nationwide.

Following the victory, Pashinyan declared that the “three-headed party of war” had been defeated. His government has pursued closer relations with Western partners while managing complex regional security issues. Analysts say the election outcome could influence Armenia’s foreign policy direction and its future engagement with the European Union.
